Below Mastery

Read stories with your student and discuss the characters, events, and ideas. Explain and discuss the meaning of any unfamiliar words. Ask your student about the central message and important moments in the story. Direct your student to use details from the story to support his or her answers.

At or Near Mastery

Read stories with your student and discuss the characters, events, and ideas. Have your student retell the stories and point out different characters’ points of view. Ask questions about the message, events, or characters and direct your student to find details in the text to support his or her answers.

Above Mastery

Ask your student to read different stories by the same author and compare and contrast the characters, events, and ideas. Have your student retell the stories and explain the characters’ points of view. Ask questions about the stories and direct your student to support the answers with details from the texts.
