With your student, search the Internet for math story problems. Ask the student what information is given and what the question is asking. Then discuss how the answer can be found.
At or Near Mastery
Give your student one- and two-step math story problems. Ask what information is given and the question being asked. Then, have your student check his or her final answer with the above information.
Above Mastery
With your student, read story problems about a known subject. Before solving, ask your student, “What answers would not make sense?” and “What information is not needed to solve the problem?”
