Here are some exercises you can work on at home with your Grade 4 student.
Below Mastery
With your student, separate 24 objects into 4 groups of 6. Regroup the objects into 8 groups of 3, 2 groups of 12, etc. Discuss why the pairs of numbers always multiply to equal 24.
At or Near Mastery
With your student, take turns creating and solving each other’s word problems (using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) or number patterns using drawings or equations.
Above Mastery
With your student, create 5 squares, 1-by-1 to 5-by-5, and write the area on each square. Look for patterns in the areas and discuss how multiplication can help compute areas.
