Here are some exercises you can work on at home with your Grade 5 student.
Below Mastery
With your student, discuss what units would be best when measuring. For example, would pounds or ounces be best when weighing a cow? Discuss why feet are not as exact as inches when measuring.
At or Near Mastery
With your student, classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on their properties. For example, all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
Above Mastery
With your student, use various tools to measure ingredients for recipes. Practice converting measurements, like quarts to cups. Discuss how to halve a recipe using equivalent fractions.
