Here are some exercises you can work on at home with your Grade 5 student.
Below Mastery
With your student, create and interpret numerical expressions for calculations. For example, 7 x (9 – 5) means “the product of 7 and the difference between 9 and 5.” or “7 times the difference between 9 and 5.”
At or Near Mastery
With your student, generate two numerical patterns using different rules; for example, “Add 3” and “Multiply by 2.” Compare the patterns, and look for relationships between the corresponding terms.
Above Mastery
With your student, compare two different numerical sequences, write the rule used to create each sequence, and explain any apparent relationships between the corresponding terms of sequences.
